This gourmet cooking recipe is a simpler version of the more famous banana cream pie but is just as delicious. This is a fun alternative and requires only a few ingredients namely bananas, vegetable gelatin, milk, sugar, oranges, and fresh cream. This is a treat that kids will have a hard time resisting. It is also ideal for toddlers who still have no teeth. Make this for a children’s party and it will be gone in no time.
The bananas are mashed and mixed with cream and other ingredients and combined with the gelatin then allowed to set in a gelatin mold. The orange slices are used to garnish the banana cream jelly. The cream has to be whipped before adding with the mashed bananas. To whip the cream, use an electric hand blender or you can manually whip it with a whisk, using vigorous strokes.
Serve this banana cream for a light dessert after a heavy or rich meal. It can also make a yummy breakfast and can accompany pancakes, French toast, or waffles. Banana cream is also fabulous with vanilla ice cream for an indulgent dessert. Top the banana cream with chocolate or caramel syrup, or whisky or rum sauce for an exquisite treat.
Gelatin is often derived from collagen that is obtained from animal by-products but there is gelatin derived from vegetables, which you can use to make this recipe. You can serve this to vegetarians as long as they are allowed to consume milk and cream, which vegans avoid since these are dairy products and come from animals. When making banana cream, use unflavored gelatin so that the natural flavors of the bananas and cream will shine through. The gelatin is simply used for texture. You can also use other fruits for garnishing like strawberries or mangoes, both of which combine well with bananas.
